I really should stop

I occasionally read the letters section on the website of the local paper. It appears that the xenophobic have a lot of time on their hands. Heaven forbid you try to use any facts on them.

With the boat of Tamil refugees that has come into Canada I questioned the one writer on the $50,000 per person that these folks were charged, finding it exceedingly unlikely that they had this sort of money or that they would be granted this level of credit. This individual responded that Sri Lanka is actually quite rich and even if they didn't they would work it off here.

I responded that the per capita GDP of a Sri Lankan is $4,100, placing it 148th in the world according to the CIA factbook. Hardly what I would call a prosperous country. As for working off the debt once here, they would be working minimum wage jobs. How long would it take to repay? I don't think criminal masterminds work with that long a time frame.

Now with the long gun registry, they are blaming the NDP. I really can't understand how a private members bill brought forth by the Conservatives is the fault of the NDP. I also called them on the poll they quote that the cops don't like the gun registry. The poll in my opinion is biased and flawed. It was conducted on a single web site. It reflects the echo chamber and is not as valid as a poll that would question rank and file policemen at random. Can you take the results of a poll off of Fox News and say that it applies globally? No, Fox News reflects the right wing side of things. Same can be said for a poll conducted on Huffington Post.

Don't read the comments on the newspaper web site, unless you're feeling masochistic. I used to read them regularly. Now I scan them very sporadically. Much better for the blood pressure.
